🇦🇹 My Work Experience in Vienna

As part of the Turing Scheme, I had the opportunity to travel to Vienna, Austria, and complete a work experience placement at SEOFox, a digital agency specialising in SEO and web-related services.

I spent around six days working at the company, gaining experience in a completely different working environment and putting my existing computing skills into practice.

🌍 Working in Vienna

One of the most valuable parts of the experience was simply working in another country.

Being placed in a professional environment in Vienna gave me the opportunity to experience a different workplace culture, meet people from a different background and become more confident working outside of my usual environment.

It was also a great opportunity to experience life in Vienna outside of the workplace, making the placement both a professional and personal experience.

🔎 SEO & Web Content

During my placement, I gained hands-on experience with search engine optimisation and web content.

One of my main tasks involved working with product listings and identifying information that was missing from existing products. I used Microsoft Excel to organise and enter the missing information, ensuring that product data was complete and consistent.

I also worked on editing product listings to make them more SEO-friendly, giving me a better understanding of how the information and wording used on a webpage can affect its usefulness for both users and search engines.

This was particularly interesting because it showed me how the technical and creative sides of web development can work together.

📊 Working With Product Data

A significant part of the placement involved handling large amounts of product information.

I had to carefully review product descriptions and extract relevant information before entering it into Excel. This required a high level of attention to detail and accuracy, as small mistakes could result in incorrect information being displayed on a website.

Working with structured data also helped me become more comfortable using spreadsheets for real business tasks rather than simply using them for college assignments.

💻 WordPress & Elementor

I also had the opportunity to develop my knowledge of WordPress and Elementor Pro.

I followed tutorials and guidance to learn more about designing and editing webpages using Elementor. This helped me understand how professional websites can be structured and customised without having to build every element entirely from code.

I also helped update a staging website, working to make sure that it matched the live version of the website.

This gave me useful insight into how changes can be tested on a staging environment before being applied to a live website.

⭐ What I Took Away From The Experience

My time at SEOFox was a brilliant opportunity to see how the skills I was developing through my T Level could be used in a real digital agency.

It gave me practical experience with SEO, websites, content and data, while also allowing me to experience working in another country.

The placement also helped build my confidence. Travelling to Vienna and working in an unfamiliar environment pushed me outside my comfort zone, and I came away from the experience feeling more comfortable adapting to new situations.

Most importantly, it showed me that there are opportunities within computing and digital technology that go far beyond simply programming. SEO, web design, content and digital marketing all play an important role in the modern technology industry, and experiencing these areas first-hand has helped me understand where my interests lie.
